Re: Last Post Wins
At the dawn of time, long before the nations of the plane had settled into their modern forms, long before the birth of the Constructors, long before the Lovers of the Opticon had settled in the Southern Spires, long before the Great Celestial Decapede had crossed the River Effloresce, long even before Erian the Fertile Footed had sown the middling lands with bountiful produce, the mighty armies of the Burnished Ones and the Sons of the Crepuscular Way faced each other down across the wasted sands of the Arenicoline Desert. A great and glorious battle was to begin, one that would decide the alignment of this plane for the rest of eternity -would it be a bastion of Radiance or Caliginosity?
On the side of the Radiant Burnished Ones stood four heroes. Magni, the hero of Curvature, whose telekinetic influence could stretch for miles. Curen, the hero of Flow, whose galvanically-animated creations were the cavalry of the Burnished Armies. Durab, the hero of Strength, whose rustic hospitality could keep even the most rag-tag of allegiances together for a lifetime. And last but not least Impai, the hero of Decay, whose powerful rhetoric could cast even the most heinous of evil empires into discord and disarray.
On the side of the Caliginous Sons of the Crepuscular Way stood four villains. Abyse, the villain of Curvature, whose forceful aura could tear a soldier apart from a world away. Singe, the villain of Flow, whose intensely powerful lightning-storms could set an ocean ablaze with blue flame. Claut, the villain of Strength, who could pulverize a town with a single footstep. And finally Dissol, the villain of Decay, who could corrupt even the purest hearts and rot even the healthiest flesh.
These two sides were evenly matched, strength matching strength, weakness matching weakness. A battle between two such forces would have stretched on for an age of ages, perhaps only ending after thousands of years of strife, if at all. But events conspired to cut this battle short. In fact, this battle to end all battles would never occur at all. The Sons of the Crepuscular Way would claim victory without a single casualty, without a single shot fired. For while the Burnished Ones were steeped in the great ideals of Honor and Respect, and looked forward to a fair and clean fight, the Crepuscular Sons had no such qualms about the use of low methods.
You see, the heroes and villains of both sides could not hope to win their fight alone, and thus had enlisted aid from the entities of the primordial world. The Burnished Ones had sought the allegiance of the beasts of the field and the fowl of the air, promising them verdant lands and clear skies to dwell in after the war was won. The Sons had sought help from the darker corners of the plane, winning the allegiance of innumerable slinkdemons, griftgremlins and dark decapedes. Unlike the beasts of the field and the fowl of the air, the dark creatures did not seem to require any enticement to join their respective cause. These monstrous vermin joined the Crepusculars for their own dark and mysterious purposes.
Impai and Dissol, the hero and villain of Decay, were both tasked with undermining the opposing side. Impai sought to accomplish this task by reasoning with the Crepuscular Sons’ minions and convincing them of the error of their ways. Dissol sought to accomplish this task by corrupting the Burnished Ones’ army of beasts and setting them against each other.
Unfortunately for the Burnished hero, the forces of Caliginosity were not so easily swayed. While Impai spoke eloquently of the glory of Radiance and the folly of darkness, the slinkdemons and griftgremlins sat and chuckled. While Impai reminded the vermin of the Crepusculars’ failure to promise them anything in return, the dark decapedes began polishing their handknives. These vermin did not fight for personal gain, they fought simply for the thrill of destruction. The hero Impai met their end at the hands of these evil forces.
The Crepuscular villain on the other hand was far more successful. The beasts of the field and the fowl of the air, being of simple mind, were easily corrupted by Dissol. Promised untold riches and power, they quickly set about eliminating the remaining Burnished heroes. And while Magni, Curen, and Durab were more than powerful enough to take them all on, the shock of betrayal meant that ultimately only Durab would survive the following fight.
As the Sons of the Crepuscular Way learned of their villain’s success and mobilized their forces to finish the deed, the hero of Strength found themselves to be the final warrior of the Burnished Ones on this plane. And as the four villains and their dark army bore down on them from the Nimian hills, and as the corrupted beasts bore down on them from the Betwixtic forests, all hope for Radiance seemed to be lost. But then Durab found something deep within themself. Thanks to the power of their bonds, the other three heroes had left pieces of their souls within Durab’s. The old alliance was not dead yet. Durab exerted all their remaining will and bound the four souls together with an immensely strong spiritual knot, in the process dissolving their own physical form and scattering the Burnished spirits to the four corners of the world.
Over the subsequent millennia, the souls of the Burnished Ones would slowly recollect their strength, and eventually regain their physical forms. When they finally ventured back into the middle realms, they feared the worst. Surely the Crepuscular Sons must have reduced the world to a dark and shambling ruin in the intervening eons? But to their surprise, this was not the case. It seemed that upon their bloodless victory, the Sons of the Crepuscular Way had immediately been beset upon by their own verminous minions, who had joined the Crepuscular cause for a fight and by golly they were going to get one. It seemed that the four villains had been slaughtered even more swiftly than their Burnished opponents. After that, the dark vermin had disappeared once more into the cracks and crevices of the world.
After their re-emergence, the Burnished heroes established their benevolent rule over the peoples of the plane, who had evolved from the beasts and fowl over the intervening millennia. They organized much of the world into the four great nations, each patterned in their own image. Magni established the Kingdom of Alabastria at the shores of the Northern Gulf. Curen established the Carabunculite Civilization along the banks of the Akhet river, on the edge of the Arenicoline desert. Impai established the Verduran Empire in the verdant farmlands of the east. And Durab established the Eternal Citystate of Ayonet amongst the Betwixtic forests. The descendants of the heroes, the Burnish-Born would continue their legacy, and guarded the great nations from threat after threat as the years went by.
And as of today, thanks to the efforts of the Burnish-Born the plane has been at peace for several centuries. The murderous Nimiumite armies have all been defeated, the mages of Mount Deiscolder have been pacified, the hordes of the far north have all been driven back. But lately, rumors have been swirling that the Sons of the Crepuscular Way did not meet their final end all those years ago. And further, that the sinister vermin who supposedly did them in have begun to re-emerge from their cracks and crevices, though thus far only at night. If there be truth to these rumors, and the Caliginous makes its presence once more in this world, who will be there to challenge it?
