Jake is a good character, he tries to change my mind.
I'm probably Jake English's biggest fan, I really love him.
But I know there are people who hate him and have things to say about him so
Trying to change my good opinion of Jake!

I feel like Jake is pretty solid, but he doesn't really do much...? He works really well in the dynamics of the Alpha kids and I think he's definitely interesting to read, but he just really does not do that much. I just feel like he needs more screentime to do badass things. That feels like a big part of the alpha kids in general to me, but I think Jake gets some of the worst of it. I wish we got more classpect power stuff from alphas who aren't Roxy, although I did enjoy the exploration of her powers a lot.

Didn't Caliborn change his name to English so that when he and Jake fight it'll be like... Super dramatic n shit?junebertVEVO wrote: ↑Fri May 23, 2025 2:43 pmto be fair im pretty sure caliborns masterpiece takes place during the meat timeline. right? isnt meat jake a fully realized page? isnt jake doing the hopeball thing the reason caliborn changed his name to lord english?BrobyDDark wrote: ↑Wed May 07, 2025 2:09 pmName a single thing he does that has an impact on anything that isn't immediately retconned

That's more of Caliborn being very optimistic in Jake's power (he will be disappointed) than Jake doing anything of impact.
I haven't been keeping up with HS2 so if Jake has done anything with his page powers since I dropped it, then I suppose that's fair. HOWEVER, Beyond Canon DOES exist in a perpetual state of "this isn't canon" and "its totally happening" so I guess it's Schrodinger's Ocurrence.

Ah, postcanon! I wasn't sure if Beyond Canon/HS2 was included in this conversation or not. He definitely does some Hope Shit! In [S] 8r8k, Hope is threatened, so... Jake Does Shit! He kind of just hopes all over the place. Uhhh, there's a hope bubble shield thing surrounding the meteor. It seems like it absorbs Jane's laser blasts so that things.. Don't explode....BrobyDDark wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 12:28 pm

He also applies his Hope powers to influence the clock. The clock is debating whether Jade has died a just or heroic death, when Jake hopes hard enough that it considers her death insignificant. It seems like he might have done similar lifesaving hope moves before- IIRC, he used it as a makeshift epipen on Tavvy, which gave Tavvy an immunity to peanuts going forward. Is Jade immune to death? Uhhh. Probably not. We'll see.
Also, he like incinerated a bunch of soldiers. Also he was naked. So, if nothing else, it was certainly very funny to see the fandom reactions Jake triggered. Whether you consider HSBC canon or not, it did let Jake go god mode for a while! Good for him. I hope (hehe pun intended) we'll continue to see Jake (or a new character) wield Hope... I'm actually a little more interested in a new character! I'd love to see more of how the aspect can be interacted with, since Jake's page class means he doesn't do much with it often.
Re: Jake is a good character, he tries to change my mind.
I feel that this thread needs a more robust definition of what your "good opinion" of Jake is. The title is about whether he's a "good character", which is pretty subjective, though we seem to have turned it into whether he's had a lot of impact on the story, which is a pretty different question. It's easy to be a "good character" without having a huge impact on the story (most of the pointless trolls who died and never returned are still pretty entertaining to read, for instance). Personally I would say Jake has a lot more impact on the story if you're willing to look at his arc nonlinearly and understand that Grandpa is still a part of Jake. But people will try to string me up and throw rocks at me for saying that kind of thing.
Is he a "good person"? Well, no
